I am Present

Welcome to Daniel Youssef’s exhibition “I am Present”. True to his artistic language, the exhibition consists of a series of neon works, drawings and sculptures.

The exhibition “I am Present” circles around the notion of home. What is home, what constitutes a home, and what exactly makes you feel at home, are questions asked throughout this body of work. Daniel Youssef has drawn inspiration from everyday life, interior magazines and pop culture, as well as looking to his dadaist predecessors. IKEA, the worldwide Swedish do-it-yourself interior and furniture store, serves as an inspiration with its slogans and commercials. Daniel Youssef has reworked and reshaped both their aesthetics and meanings, and by doing so, asking poignant questions about the world and the time in which we live.

The concept of culture and belonging is a core in the artistry of Daniel Youssef. Having grown up with two languages, he never felt fully at ease with either of them. Born and raised by immigrant parents in the small town of Växjö, Sweden, he juggles two cultures, two languages and two contexts, often finding himself dwelling in the land of “in between”. This ambiguous sense of belonging, or rather, search of belonging, has become a strong artistic identity and serves as a never-ending source of creativity. The earlier works of Daniel Youssef mirrored the view of the native versus “the other”, and seemingly playful phrases and words carried several levels of interpretation.

Humour paired with vulnerability echoes in the exhibition, where narration is a founding pillar. By using seemingly straight forward phrases, Daniel Youssef continues his reflection on society and culture. Beyond the strong neon lights and commercial messages, lies an honest attempt to decoding our time.

Daniel Youssef (born 1975 in Växjö, Sweden) lives and works in Stockholm. He has exhibited, among others at Södertälje Konsthall, Skövde konsthall, Nordiska Museet, Stockholm, Arsenalsgatan 3, Stockholm, and at Bozar in Brussels. His work is represented in the collections of, among others, Skövde Konsthall, Nordiska Museet, Stockholm and Ståhl Collection, Norrköping, as well as in numerous private and corporate collections. Daniel Youssef is the former recipient of the working grant from the Mirror Institution, Sweden.

Utställningen ”I am Present” handlar om hemmet som idé. Vad är ett hem, vad utgör ett hem och vad är det som gör att man känner sig som hemma, är frågor som konstnären närmar sig i dessa verk. Daniel Youssef finner inspiration i vardagslivet, i inredningsmagasin och i populärkulturen, likväl som hos sina dadaistiska föregångare från det tidiga 1900-talet. Reklamkampanjer från Ikea, den numera världsomspännande inrednings-och möbeljätten, återkommer i omarbetad form både till yta och innehåll i en serie teckningar. Genom att återanvända och sätta dessa budskap i ett nytt sammanhang, tillför konstnären nya tolkningsmöjligheter och belyser samtidigt vår tids eviga jakt på yta och perfektion. Neonverkens styrka ligger både i budskapet och det rent visuella. De färgglada orden bygger delvis Daniel Youssefs estetik, men än viktigare blir möjligheten till reflektion över det till synes slagkraftiga.

Koncept som tillhörighet och språk utgör kärnan i Daniel Youssefs konstnärskap. I hans familj talades under uppväxten två språk, vilket ledde till att han inte riktigt kände sig hemma i något av dem. Som andra generationens invandrare, befinner han sig fortfarande i ett språkligt och kulturellt mellanförskap, med en fot i föräldrarnas respektive hemmakulturer och med den andra i den svenska. Detta tudelade förhållningssätt till världen och till det egna jaget medför ett evigt sökande i jakt på tillhörighet, på identitet och på den inte helt lättdefinierade känslan av att vara hemma. Konstnärens tidigare verk har ofta utgått från bilden och uppfattningen om ”den andre”. Med både humor och skärpa använde han mycket elegant till synes lekfulla och lättsamma ord och meningar för att få betraktaren att reflektera över olika lager av betydelser och kontextuella laddningar.

Humor och sårbarhet löper som en röd tråd i de nya verken, där berättandet fortsatt är centralt. Genom att återigen använda sig av ord och meningar, fortsätter Daniel Youssef att genom språket söka svar på sina frågor om vår samtid.

Daniel Youssef (född 1975 i Skövde) bor och verkar i Stockholm. Han har haft separatutställningar bl a på Södertälje konsthall, Skövde konsthall, Nordiska museet, Stockholm och Arsenalsgatan 3, Stockholm. Han har deltagit i flera grupputställningar, bl a Swedish Ecstasy, på Bozar i Bryssel. Han är representerad bl a på Södertälje konsthall, Skövde konsthall, Ståhl Collection, Norrköping, samt i flertalet privata samlingar och företagssamlingar. Han har tidigare mottagit arbetsstipendium från the Mirror Institution.
